Manual and mechanical disassembly of products into its parts and components can uncover hidden material value. This process is made much easier when product or system designers have integrated design for deconstruction or disassembly into their process. Typical challenges in disassembly are fastening systems that compromise material quality and the resources (i.e. time money, equipment, etc.) required to extract valuable materials.
Although demolition is still typical, the building design and construction sector recognizes the value of extracting high-value materials for resale or reuse. Given the resources needed to effectively extract these materials, it is not always financially viable. Steel, wood, aluminum, furnishings and finishes are all building elements that can be reused and/or repurposed for another life.
