Waste to Energy (WtE) is a waste treatment process that generates energy in the form of electricity and heat through incineration. WtE is considered a type of thermo-chemical conversion and energy recovery.
Typically using Municipal Solid Waste (MSW), WtE is a preferable a waste handling process to landfill as the much of the embodied energy is recovered. However, WtE should be considered as one of the last options at the end of life, after reuse, refurbishing and recycling.
The by-products of WtE include metals, aggregates, ash and char. There are several landfill diversion methods available for these materials depending on processing quality and geography.
