Lean manufacturing

Lean manufacturing is an operations strategy that aims to continuously and iteratively eliminate waste (“muda”) through improved production processes. Lean manufacturing is an evolution of the Toyota Production System (TPS). There are seven typical types of waste that you can target to reduce:

  • Overproduction
  • Inventory
  • Transportation
  • Motion
  • Defects
  • Over-processing
  • Waiting

After identifying system waste, you would then analyze, identify the root-cause, resolve and repeat.

Tools for implementing lean manufacturing include:

  • Value stream mapping
  • Root-case analysis
  • Kanban
  • Zero defects
  • 5S system
  • Poke yoke
  • Kaizen
